Healing The Nobleman’s Son – Summary

Jesus returned to Cana where he had changed the water into wine. News of his miracles were spreading throughout Galilee. In Capernaum, there was a royal official, a nobleman whose son was at the point of death. Desperate to save his son, the nobleman traveled to Cana and begged Jesus to come and heal his son.

This would be the pattern of several of Jesus’ miracles. People would come to Jesus with great needs. But instead of approaching in faith in Jesus and the Word like the Centurion, they would bring the problem, or beg in fear.

Jesus said, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe.”

The nobleman’s faith was based on his feelings and emotions – what he saw, heard and felt etc. He did not believe that Jesus could heal his son unless Jesus came with him. We know this because he was begging for help, which is rooted in fear. Faith never begs. Faith comes from hearing the Word, God’s Word, not fear.

There is also no distance or time in prayer, or in the spiritual world. God is only limited by your faith. Whether Jesus left with the nobleman or stayed in Cana was unimportant. All that was necessary was for the nobleman to accept the Word of Jesus as truth and act on it.

Jesus said, “Go! Your son will live.”

The nobleman had a choice. He could reject his fear of his son’s death and take Jesus at his Word. Or he could keep on begging Jesus to come with him. He chose wisely and believed the Word. We know this not only because the Bible tells us, but by his very actions we know that his son would live because he followed Jesus’ command to go. Had he not believed Jesus, it is doubtful he would have left. Faith needs corresponding action (faith and works – James 2:14-26).

As the nobleman returned to Capernaum, he was met by his servants that told him his son was well. When he asked them at what time the fever broke, they told him, and it was the exact time he had heard and believed the Word of Jesus and departed for home.

John goes on to tell the reader that all of his household believed in Jesus from that moment.

But even as he was on the road going down, his servants met him and reported, saying, Your son lives!

So he asked them at what time he had begun to get better. They said, Yesterday during the seventh hour (about one o’clock in the afternoon) the fever left him.

Then the father knew that it was at that very hour when Jesus had said to him, Your son will live. And he and his entire household believed (adhered to, trusted in, and relied on Jesus). — John 4:51-53 <AMP>

    Hi there
I really appreciate your great website. I like the way you’ve organised the information by story. This makes it very easy to find information. We must think the same way because this is how I have organised my own website http://www.missionbibleclass.org
Under “Children’s Sermons and Lessons” you have a link to my site: “Teacher Preparation: Healing of the Nobleman’s Son”. I’ll be shutting down the link you have but have put the page in a different place on the site. Could you please change it to “Healing of the Nobleman’s Son” at the following link? http://missionbibleclass.org/1b0-new-testament/life-of-christ-middle/healing-of-the-noblemans-son/

    Thank you
