But a certain Samaritan, as he traveled along, came down to where he was; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity and sympathy [for him], And went to him and dressed his wounds, pouring on [them] oil and wine. Then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn and took care of him. — Luke 10:33-34 <AMP>

Good Samaritan Parable – Summary

One of the more popular parables told by Jesus is the story of the Good Samaritan. Jesus was challenged by a lawyer to explain the most important commandment. Immediately, Jesus turned the question back on the lawyer to expose his real motive by asking him to provide his view. The lawyer quoted the law of Moses, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength and love your neighbor as yourself.”

Jesus commended the lawyer for his answer. But the lawyer was determined to qualify who exactly was his neighbor. In response, Jesus told the parable of the Good Samaritan.

The parable begins with a man falling prey to thieves on his way from Jerusalem down to Jericho. They left him half dead. Two religious leaders pass by without helping. The third person, a despised Samaritan, treats the victim’s wounds, places him on his animal and carries him to an inn. In a final act of compassion, he promises to pay for any expenses the innkeeper incurs until the Samaritan returns.

The simple lesson of the parable is that you should care for the needs of anyone regardless of race, religion or other divisions created by man as the Samaritan had. Love fulfills the entire law. And when you show compassion for others, we are following the example of Jesus, taking his place on earth until he returns.

The deeper lesson can be found in the lawyer’s question. He had wanted to justify himself, or prove he was worthy of eternal life. But this is not possible without Christ (the Samaritan who heals us and saves us). Without a new heart, recreated and filled with the love of Christ, you can never fully love your neighbor as Christ loves you.

This parable is rich with revelation and worthy of much meditation.

“Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?”

“The one who showed mercy to him,” he said.

Then Jesus told him, “Go and do the same.” — Luke 10:36-37 <HCSB>
