Then the angel of the Lord came and sat beneath the great tree at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash of the clan of Abiezer. Gideon son of Joash was threshing wheat at the bottom of a winepress to hide the grain from the Midianites. The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, “Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!” — Judges 6:11-12 <NLT>
Gideon Summary
Less than a generation after the death of Joshua, God’s people were already turning to idolatry and disobedience. They had forgotten their covenant with God and lost His protection. This was not God’s will for his chosen people, so he raised up judges to rescue his people from the oppression of nearby nations. One of these was Gideon.
Gideon was threshing wheat in secret to hide it from the Midianites when an angel appeared to him and declared, “You mighty warrior. God is with you.”
Gideon was perplexed by this greeting because he did not see himself as a mighty warrior, and the conditions of his people did not seem to indicate that God was with them at all. He protested that he was the the least of his family and clan. How could he save them?
One of the awesome attributes of God is that He can take the most insignificant person in the eyes of the world, and make them a king, queen, prophet or mighty warrior. All He needs is a willingness and faith. And although Gideon required some symbolic assurances, God had found His champion.
Gideon gathered his forces and prepared to attack the Midian army that was encamped just to the North. But God told him he had too many warriors. Gideon instructed all those that were afraid to go back home. Fear is the opposite of faith and can be quite destructive. Left with just 10,000, God told Gideon that his army was still too big. God wanted to make sure that when He gave them the victory, there could be no doubt it was because God was fighting for them. At a spring, God instructed Gideon to divide the troops based on the way they drank the water. The 300 that cupped the water in their hands and then drank were selected as Gideon’s army.
Facing a massive army too large to count, Gideon’s 300 men attacked at night armed with torches, horns and clay jars. At the appointed time they broke the jars, blew their horns, raised their torches and shouted, “A sword for the Lord and Gideon!”
In the panic that ensued, the Midianites turned on each other and there was a massive slaughter. God saved His people from the Midianites. But the victory was short-lived. Not long after Gideon’s death, the Children of Israel turned away from God and His protection once again.
The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many warriors with you. If I let all of you fight the Midianites, the Israelites will boast to me that they saved themselves by their own strength. — Judges 7:2 <NLT>
